Mondo Beyondo 2008: Where will you go?

Okay everybody, now for the fun part. We get to create our intentions and our Mondo Beyondo list for 2008. For those of you who aren't familiar with this, I let go of declaring resolutions years ago when I realized they didn't work for me. Mostly they didn't work because they made me feel like a crappo person. They seemed to be about quitting something I liked (ie. chocolate), starting something I didn't like (must pick up jogging this year!) and just basically being a better, more perfect and disciplined (get organized!) version of myself.
Blech.

I prefer starting the year off with declaring what I want to draw into my life and let those items entice me into action. Sometimes the difference here exists in language. For example, instead of saying, "I want to get rid of these saddle bags" it might inspire you more to say, "My intention is to feed my body beautiful, whole foods and swim twice a week." Or, instead of a vague, "Stop watching tv" you might present an inspiring alternative for yourself: "My intention is to read or knit each night after dinner and complete all of my unfinished craft projects by May."

It's up to you, whatever gets you going people! This is what works for me.

After you list your intentions, let's do the list that is truly Mondo Beyondo status. What are the things you are wanting to manifest that are almost too scary to even write down? The ones that elicit a gremlin response of "You can't have that!" or "Who are you to ask for that?" or "Fat chance. That will never happen. You're not a good enough....(fill in the blank)"

Are you nervous? You should be. This list should be a bit dangerous. It should make you feel a little shy and excited. Butterflies abound.

Since I'm not sure how long I have before Ben wakes up, I will start with my one big Mondo Beyondo item: Complete my proposal and find a publisher for my book project. (This one feels scary to write!)

"If there is any secret to this life I live, this is it: the sound of what cannot be seen sings within everything that can." -Brian Andreas

Thankyou so much for Part 1. I felt better after typing it all out. A chance to reflect!
i would like 2008 to be the year of Me! As is said in part 1, Create Myself, find better ways to deal with problems, ask for things, and find what makes me really happy!

Better late than never... http://theittybittythings.blogspot.com/2008/01/mondo-beyondo-with-completed-blanks.html

Thanks, Andrea! (Have been lurking since I bought a necklace--JOY!--from you about a year and a half ago.)

Posted by: cjh at January 22, 2008 07:44 PM

Put me down for a copy of your book, too! The way this is going, you will have a Number One Best Seller before you even have a book! (Tell the publishers that!).
In the last little while, I have been touched by people who have willingly and happily put themselves out for me, so in thankful response to them, this year I intend to do the same: "others First" will be my motto and motivation.

Thank you so much for this. I finally did it and wanted to share it with you. Thanks again for the inspiration, much joy to you, Christie

It's funny: I was willing to say goodbye to 2007 in a matter of seconds, but 2008 has been a much more difficult and thought-provoking exercise for me (not to mention exciting and fun!).

So far I have:

- Start my own business. I would like to do something with food, either growing it or baking it (or both).

- Go to Nova Scotia and drive around the entire province for a month in a camper van.

- Move into a quiet place that I can really love and which feels like home.

- Be able to walk down the street, brush my hair, breathe etc, without feeling scared.

- Start singing in a jazz band and perform in public.

- Feel peaceful more times than not.

Funnily enough, it is the two "feeling" ones which seem the most difficult to achieve at the moment.

Posted by: Belinda at January 15, 2008 11:30 AM

part one made me feel more peaceful. i have a feeling that part two is going to speed up my heartbeat a bit.
in 2008 i intend to: get active and feel good about it, write more, open myself to love from other people, and turn off the negativity i direct toward myself.
you are a powerful super super woman. publish that book. post haste!!

Posted by: sara at January 14, 2008 07:54 PM

this was the hardest thing i've done in years!!!! but finally, i figured it out. thanks!

Posted by: tanaya at January 14, 2008 04:53 PM

You are such an inspiration... thank you!!

Writing part 1 was easier than part 2, but I did it. It was interesting to see that part 2 has nothing to do with monetary items.

write the book
the I allow my heart to open to accept people in, all while still learning to trust myself
continue to explore my creativity
continue to explore ways to volunteer
continue to not allow my fears to hold me back
to take care of me, to get healthy, live healthy

Cheers to an amazing 2008!!

Your blog is one of my daily reads and a big source of inspiration. I love your Mondo Beyondo list idea. Resolutions don't work for me either and I am tired of feeling bad about what I didn't accomplish each year. I am thinking about what to put on my list, but for now, I wanted to thank you for how interactive your blog is this year.

PS: As for your goals to publish a book, I will definitely take a copy... :-)

Posted by: Enyasi at January 13, 2008 07:19 PM

Mondo Beyondo!
It's going to be big, because so many things happened to me this year that would have seemed scary even to dream they were so HUGE. So! The big long term, I dare myself to dream dreams:
Visit the Taj Mahal, See Stonehenge, work on a political campaign, go to business school, live in the mission, own a home, start dancing again, take a road trip to the south, learn to sail, have a awesome wedding, so some major philanthropic/ humanitarian work.

Posted by: Meg at January 13, 2008 05:42 PM

these lists are wonderful I kept my resolves/intentions very simple this year. Good luck on yours! Just do it. go to book expo america it is amazing.

Posted by: alex at January 13, 2008 07:11 AM

Thank you so much for this, Andrea. I posted my second part at my site too. I really like thinking this way, with intentions instead of the other way around. I'm really excited for this year!

Posted by: ~moe~ at January 12, 2008 02:26 PM

Posted my Part Two. I hope when I go to your book signing, you'll let Ben sign my book, too...since he's my favorite Mondo Beyondo manifestation thus far... ;)

Posted by: Marilyn at January 12, 2008 06:59 AM

What I wish to draw to me this year:

I want more than anything to be able to follow the unusual, idiosyncratic, and ordinary inclinations and visions of my own sweet self.. if only we could all do this! how I would like to live in such a world;
I am asking the father of my children, who I have been separated from for two years, to try walking the baby steps of getting back together - may this work out wonderfully;
May I finally start my blog in earnest;
May I grow in my work as a somatic therapist in the way that I have dreamed of;
That I dance lots;
That I have enough money to enjoy my life (pretty basic, oh so important);
May I make one new great friend this year;
That I make great strides in becoming the supremely good parent I have dreamed of being;
May I be at peace and live with self-acceptance whatever this year brings.

that's awesome! i would buy your book in a second. i live in australia too and i'd be asking for it at my local book store as soon as it was out. how cool!

my mondo beyondo list -

i intend to explore! my own potential by trying lots of creative things which i have been to scared to do before (i've got a gremlin), and italy (!!), my first trip to the northern hemisphere.

i intend to finish renovating our house and garden with veggie patch so it's ready for a very small person (when we have one of those.)

i intend to look after my body and be kind to my soul (ie. stop being hard on myself.)

i'm ready for you, 2008!

Posted by: janet at January 11, 2008 10:49 PM

I love your Mondo Beyondo lists! I'm working on mine right now. And I think your book proposal idea will be brilliant - I will so buy it!!!
Good luck!!

For 2008 I intend to:

-Tell my friends and family more of the things that I love and admire about them.
-To continue push past my fears and keep taking the steps toward moving to Portland and attending culinary school in April
-To open myself up to a relationship again

Mondo Beyondo: To Open my own bakery full of warmth and good food.

I have been reading this journal for about a year now and have always been too shy to comment on anything. However, as part of my Mondo Beyondo for this new year, I am trying to break out of my shell and live a little more! I just love your journal-it is inspiring and fun to read! So here is the link to my 2008:

First, thanks for sharing your Mondo Beyondo item! That was a brave thing to do.

Okay - I'll go for what scares me/produces butterflies:

1. Make art everyday.
2. Open my Etsy shop (i.e. actually place items in the shop to sell).
3. To support myself and my family from a financial perspective by doing things that bring me joy.

Hi Andrea!
I am a first time commentor, but a long time reader of your juicy blog. I think I first encountered your super-hero self through SARK books, which was a lovely introduction. I wanted to say thanks for all the inspiration over this past year. 2007 for me was possibly the year of the Blog, since I discovered so many fantastic and creative sites, and it inspired me to start one of my own. Thanks also for the MONDO BEYONDO which I have adopted, starting this year, as a great new years ritual.
I hope that your 2008 is resplendent and sweet!

Guess my comment went off into space yesterday. I have my mondo beyondo Part 1 & 2 on my site! So proud of myself for finishing it.

In this the year Two Thousand and Eight I am:

*Eating healthfully & re-shaping my body - I am making it better, stronger, faster...
*Going back to the Virgin Islands, Hawaii and New York for work and/or for play
*Making a habit of leaving the past in the past
*Figuring out how to ask for what I need from friends & family and then asking for it
*Trying everything I've wanted to try with out judgement, reservation or listening to that voice that says "You can't do that..."
*Going to Spain
*Learning to surf (Surf Safari here I come!)
*Truly trusting that there is a man and a plan for me and not worrying about not do-ing or be-ing enough
*Buying: THE camera, the boots, and the bike
*Paying off MOST of my student loan (if not all)
and
*Starting that Roth IRA

-- I want to eat healthy foods that make me feel like I can leap tall buildings with a single bound.
-- I want to take photos I am so happy with I can then confidently call myself a photographer - and maybe even sell them.
-- I want to listen - really listen - to others when they speak.
-- I hope to positively energize the people around me, sharing my own enthusiasm for life.

And for the scary one:
I want to move - not just down the road - but across the country. To live in a place so new to me, so different from everything I know - that I can't help but be inspired by all that surrounds me.

Wow! Now I'm really jazzed!!

Posted by: Chris at January 10, 2008 03:58 PM

I will dance wildy at home and in public without reservation.
I will learn to paint.
I will tell my husband and son each day how much
I love them and need them.
I will learn to love my body, not just accept it.
I will run a 1/2 marathon.
I will run a marathon.

Posted by: Lisa at January 10, 2008 01:39 PM

Ok, so I narrowed my life down to 8 roles--wife, artist, creative learner, world citizen, friend, etc. Then I filled a big legal pad full of goals and actions that will help me accomplish those goals and now I'm going after them!

The biggest is that 2008 is the year I go pro with my art! (Funny, it gets a little less scary every time I say it.)

Thanks for the extra inspiration, Andrea!

Posted by: jolieguillebeau at January 10, 2008 12:20 PM

Ooh! Lists!!!

1. Turn my body into a healthy vessel for pregnancy and for me (of course!) this year.

2. Continue to beautify my surroundings.

3. Thrive to find happiness in my career

At my Weight Watchers meeting this week and last, the leader asked what our goal was for Dec. 31, 2008, whether it be a pounds-loss goal, a running-more goal or lowered cholesterol.

I'd like to be at a healthier weight so I can start trying to get pregnant. That scares me so much to say it, but it's what I want for myself and my soon-to-be-hubby.

Hi Andrea,
I linked to your blog through Kelly's blog and I love this philosophy of ending the previous year and starting the next. Thanks for the inspiration. I have no idea what type of book you hope to publish, but if it's in the area of anything creative, I would love it if you would share with me more about it, as I am an acquisitions editor. Take care and I wish you the best.

Here's my mondo beyondo (love this):
- creative-everyday-lifestyle with my bf and little one
- find a new publisher, who publishes the manuskripts I really care for
- found a theatre and do the pieces I develop and direct (feels most scary)
- dare to call myself an artist (okay thats even more scarier)

I want to draw people to love into my life: a child, and a new friend. I want to be present and deal with the loss of my hopes. I want to be in a space where I can live with the vulnerability that trust brings with it.

BTW, special best wishes to Sarah. I can appreciate what she's wishing for. I hope you find a good, warm, supporting place to be. If not, know that there are plenty of good, warm, supportive people 'round here, as well.

I'm still working through my mantra(s) for the year, but here are the scary and important things that I really want...

- to find a new career path in creativity, design and education (which I already do) that is truly COMPASSIONATE, where the compassion and empathy that I bring is truly valued.

- Train for another 5K. Walk or run. Anyone want to join me somewhere in So Cal?

- Be heard.

Hi Andrea --

I've worked in publisher forever, have commented here a few times, and now do freelance editorial work. It would take a little research at my end -- and more info abt your book -- to suggest an agent, but I do know folks at most of the big houses. Anyway, my point is, when you're ready, and if you'd like, I might be able to offer some help with the proposal, publishing biz details, etc. Mondo Beyondo Presto. Dunno if my email address is cached at your end, but just post if you want to be in touch. Oh, and I'm presently in Berkeley. A happy and wise 2008 to everyone here! Here's a very Mondo quote for you: "To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe."

Posted by: CLH at January 9, 2008 08:35 PM

Hi Andrea, Thank you for posing these questions! Rather than bog down your comments with my wordy response, I wrote a post about it. http://penelopeillustration.com/blog/2008/01/09/mondo-beyondo/

You don't have to read it, but I wanted to put it out there. :)

I intend to move into a neighbor where there is a real community that I feel welcome and supported.

Posted by: sarah at January 9, 2008 05:20 PM

Quick and dirty still applies right?! What do I want to draw to me this year? A big positive gallery to represent me, and while we're talking big- an application accepted for a studio residency in Paris,flowing funds that come quickly lovingly easily, and while I'm at it- joyous easy physical energy (which means this is the year to front up to the free tai chi class under the fig trees in my neighbourhood park) and better productivity in my vegie garden. I want to be a more sturdy conduit for big creative energy,yep,and a manifester par excellence.Yay! Thanks Andrea, you've inspired me out of a sleepy morning into action. I'm in Australia and I'm visualising your book in my local independent bookstore (and me buying it!)xxx

It's the year I turn 40, and I feel so much pressure to make it really count! I like your approach, though. My final intention will be to forgive myself for not accomplishing whatever I thought I should accomplish.

I wrote my Mondo list yesterday, just before the New Moon of the New Year. The best part of closing 2007 was being able to acknowledge that I painted one beautiful painting. I realized, one was enough. One beautiful painting. My Mondo list took me to Africa, painting with the children. Not to save them, but to be with them. A woman now paints with the children, she sells their paintings online and uses the money to provide their families with food and medicine. The mothers have started beading bowls while they wait for the children. I just want to be sitting there, painting with the children, in Africa, watching the elephants stroll past...

My intention this year is to listen, to stay focussed and be the best that I can be - at work and at home. I intend to balance a strong work ethic with adequate relaxation, treats and sleep to remain at my peak - healthy, happy and helpful.

My 1st MB for 2008 would be to create a positive national brand for our web business and increase our continuing monthly profits x5 by June whilst keeping our customers happy. My 2nd MB would be to positively excel in my new job so that I achieve promotion by the end of the year.

My goals are a bit career top heavy this year, but I'm keen to concentrate on these so that I can make a buck and then start spending half of my time volunteering. Good luck to everyone here!

Great way to frame it, Andrea. What we want to draw more of to ourselves.

Mine: Health, well-being, joy, abundance, fun, creative accomplishment, relaxation, safety, security, loving, skill, all for the Highest Good.

Mon Monbéyon for 2008: I'd like to have the Halfland set built, puppets made, camera and lighting equipment on board, speedy computer to run the animation editing process, and a few shots made so that I can revel in their glorious exciting thrilling beauty. (For the Highest Good, with enough health and pleasurably-made money to enjoy it all, please. Thank you.) Yay.
