Assignment #2: Photograph something so close, it's hard to decipher what it is

boxes of something, Canon Digital Rebel XTi

Remember that kid's magazine Highlights that used to be in the dentist's office? I used to love this exercise that they had in the back pages.

I remember those pictures in Highlights! My attempt turned out to be more like those "I Spy" books though...

I loved those in Highlights too! Mine attempt (here) is more like an "I Spy" book though. I'm loving these different assignments--fun new ways to look at familiar things.

I don't know Highlights but we had similar magazines in Germany. Love the assignment! Mine is
done (http://inside-my-shell.blogspot.com/2007/08/superhero-assignment-2-photograph.html)

tv tubes?

I was always afraid of highlights... don't know why.
The kids love it now though and my fear is gone. i guess i was a weird kid.

Here's my attempt http://www.barefeetsparkle.com/blog/?p=221#comments

My guess as to what's in your photo, is it's those long floursecent light tubes/bulbs like in office or industrial light fixtures.
I really got a kick out of looking at it and trying to figure out what they were.
I was inspired to try this at home and while looking around the house for inspiration...I decided to photograph an artichoke that was in my fridge. Up, really, really, close it looked like reptile skin or some weird alien landscape.
My daughter and mom couldn't figure out what was in the picture until I got out the artichoke and sat it next to the photo I took.
I guess we all had way too much time on our hands at my house today...but it was a fun assignment.
Keep the good ideas coming.
:)

i used to get those magazines...i don't know if its the same ones, but here in canada it was on the back of chikadee magazine!

this task was a wee bit harder than i expected...if i got close enough to something to make it hard to decipher it was blurry...but i did get one to work very well in the end!
thanks for the challenge!

I actually thought it was those pianola music things. You know the ones you put in the pianola then you pretend you're really good at playing the piano? Mmmm, could be quite quite wrong.

Though I initially thought this one was going to be beyond the day's possibilities, it turned out to be a miniature savior. I don't want to put a whole link in here, but the post is "Yet another in a row" (6 August '07). Thanks, Andrea!

Try this one.
I think it is kinda easy but it is hard to pick out one picture when you took all of them and know what they are.

Wow, I was just thinking about that section of Highlights last week. I was feeling stuck for inspiration and was thinking about things I was attracted to as a child. That was my favorite section! I'm trying to remember some of the photos... pineapple skin and pencil erasers maybe? Too funny. Anyway great photo and I think I'll join in on your assignments. Thanks Andrea!

Ok, mine's done!

Trouble with a point-and-shoot, though, is you get a lot of blurry attempts!

Posted by: VDog at August 6, 2007 12:41 PM

Those are lightbulbs. The long ones.

Posted by: Lu at August 6, 2007 12:01 PM

I'm going with light bulbs as my guess, too.

Gonna see if I can come up with something good for this challenge....

Looks like old television tubes!

i do remember highlights, of course. i loved to see what that scoundrel goofus was up to and how gallant would ethically outperform his brother in every issue.

great photo!
