feast on your life

Love after Love

The time will come
When, with elation,
You will greet yourself arriving
At your own door, in your own mirror,
And each will smile at the other’s welcome,

And say, sit here, Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
To itself, to the stranger who has loved you

All your life, whom you ignored
For another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

The photographs, the desperate notes,
Peel your image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

~ Derek Walcott ~

...
I found this poem in a wonderful book called, "Ten Poems to Change Your Life" by Roger Housden. It is a perfect little book.

andrea,

last night I treated myself to sark's new book....l smiled and giggled aloud when I saw a picture and a page for you in it... as I skimmed some of the pages I kept thinking how when I thought of friendships I didn't once think that meant to be a friend to myself...I started to think this book is going to be a great one for me to read and I thought of this poem...perfect timing to share it with us all. Thank you.

That is one of my most favorite poems. I recommend finding a recording of Walcott reading it -- his voice is amazing.

Wasn't this poem used in The Time Traveler's Wife? One of my favorite books -- talk about heart-opening!

Thank you so much for sharing that poem. My focus of today has been to return to my self, moment by moment and reading this brought a beautiful grounding. Much gratitude.

I love Roger Housden's book "Ten Poem To Change Your Live". The first poem in it that I read was, The Journey" by Mary Oliver, it took my breath away. He also has another book "Ten Poems To Open Your Heart". Just as beautiful, if not more. BTW, beautiful pictures of your son Ben.
