7 weeks and he already knows how to pose for the camera

One fun part of becoming a mom is all the gear! It's true that you don't need a whole lot in those first months. When the time comes, I will be happy to hand Ben some Tupperware to keep him busy instead of an expensive toy with bells and whistles. Nevertheless, having inherited a shopping gene from my mom, here is a list of things I am enjoying tremendously. Some are saving our life, some are simply wonderful gifts we've received.

Just last week I found this necklace by Rena Tom. I fell in love, chatted with my sister about it (she wanted to buy it for me) and the very next day it showed up in my mailbox with Benjamin on it. A gift from Rena Tom! I am now convinced it is prettyand magic.

This fleece sling by Kangaroo Corner has saved our sanity. Both Matt and I have one in different sizes.

I've been loving the Ergo carrier and look forward to using it even more when he gets bigger.

This gift of a cashmere baby blanket is so yummy I haven't even used it with the baby yet. (How can I risk a blowout on cashmere?) and have wrapped myself in it at night.

Weleda calendula diaper cream is like a baby spa treatment.

Anything by Zutano on Ben is so cute I want to take a bite out of him.

Wipe warmer: I thought this was totally frivolous until I saw the magical effect it had on the baby. Changing him went from traumatic to day at the spa. Who wants a cold wipe on their warm bum?

Diaper Dekor: no stinky diaper smell.
Bugaboo stroller: Ours is a hand-me-down (how lucky are we?!) and we love it. The bassinet attachment is perfect for rolling up alongside our bed.

Glamour mom nursing tanks are sassy and functional.

I also love this Bravado nursing bra I discovered recently.

Was thrilled to find this Dutailier glider used on Craig's List. It is sooo comfortable.

I got this fabulous Fleurville diaper bag from Jessica and adore it... I also love the Petunia Picklebottom bag.

The Baby Book by Sears and Sears is the perfect reference book for the new parent.
The Happiest Baby on the Block was the best tool in our kit for those first weeks.
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency was a fun, light read during the wee hours.
Oprah Magazine is always the best. She is my hero.
Jen Lemen's new zine is as wonderful as she is.

And when I need the world to come to me, I go to my friend Wendy's color collection tour in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico (One of my favorite places in the world). It's amazing to see photos I would have taken myself through someone else's eyes... she is all about superhero colors.

And of course, the indispensible Canon Rebel XTi.

I didn't read thought the comments to know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but the painting in the background is so beautiful! It is the most perfect moment and it was captured so beautifully. Wow. I really, really love that painting.

7 weeks already????? My, how time flies! He's a handsome little guy, and his mommy is a beauty.

Posted by: W. Lotus at January 29, 2007 08:14 AM

Look at that little beaty!
Andrea, I wanted to add a parenting book to your reading list - as much as Kim and I were Sears & Sears converts at the beginning, we eventually found Becoming The Parent You Want To Be (by Davis and Keyser), which although not always as medically specific as the Sears series, is refreshingly broad-minded when it comes to exactly what approach you choose on any given issue.
More pix please!

Love this picture.

You ... holding Ben ... both so gorgeous! And thank you so much for the story of his birth in the previous post. I have no sister, and no one ever invited me to witness a birth--which was sad for someone who desperately wanted a child. You are such a vivid and honest writer, I really could almost FEEL the experience. I am happy that your generosity of spirit (telling such a personal story), gave me such a gift!

Posted by: Pamela at January 29, 2007 12:56 AM

Ohhhh... this is a wonderful picture. This is the first time we've seen you since the birth, and as cute as Ben is (and he's CUTE) I am totally blown away by the new look in your eye, and the peace on your face... it's such a amazing transformation.
And the list is super fun too. Like I need any more encouragment in my ongoing baby craze... my biological clock has been ticking like mad for the last 11 years (that's since I was 16!)

You and your baby are beautiful! I will refer back to your list of good finds when I am hopefully pregnant soon!

Posted by: Andrea at January 28, 2007 05:27 PM

I read sears befor my first, Tracy Hogg's Secrets of the Baby Whisperer has proven to be a MUCH better resource (can you say midnight bible). I would check it out of the library and give it a look, you know when you have a minute.

Sigh...what an absolutely sublime photo! I am loving, loving, loving your posts. Thank you for taking the time to continue them amidst adjusting to mom-hood!

Rock on, Coaching/Jewlery Sistah!

I found your site via another blog...and just read your post about the birth of your son. My son just turned 1 last weekend. Everyone always told me "it will go by so fast" so I have tried to soak up every emotion, feeling, experience...because "they" were soooo right. Each day is a new journey...ENJOY! :) He's beautiful.

Every one knows the best toys are tupperware and saucepans with a wooden spoon (for the drums).

Tupperware is so versatile. Want sandcastles? Make yours different with tupperware. Want to make chocolate (aka children playing in the garden with soil) cake, make it in tupperware! Want to store your collection of worms/insects, tupperware. Raining and need a hat? Tupperware! (OK, I'll stop now).

Spoons! Don't forget stainless steel dessert spoons also make GREAT toys. You can stick them in your mouth if you are teething, you can bang them on your saucepans, you can bang them on the floor. Oh the noise, oh the fun.

For christmas, an empty cardboard box. No toy necessary.

Yes, motherhood certainly agrees with you. There is such peace in your face and yet I also love the strength and love in your arms too. Such a sweet boy! Such a sweet moment! I can't describe the overwhelming happiness and hope I feel for you.

Hee hee- too cute- you both look so, so comfortable with each other...

I'm surprised at all the expensive toys my eight-month-old has, nothing pleases him more than a Tupperware container.

If there were a CuteOverload.com for Babies and Mamas, I'd nominate you and Ben! (Wait -- *is* there such a site? I wonder...)

Posted by: jennifer at January 27, 2007 12:12 AM

Oh, so many things we've also enjoyed! I think you have the right idea to keep it simple; my mantra going forward is that I need less than I think -- this is true with toys and gear. But there's always time for change and improvement.
Best of luck to you -- I love checking in here -- it's a breath of fresh air.
Someday I hope to use my Canon XTi as well as you do! (And one of your necklaces is on my graduate school graduation wish list, too!)
All the best --

Not sure how I got here, but oh what a great first post for me to see - beautiful, beautiful boy.

I too found the fleece tube sling absolutely irreplaceable. My son lived in it while I worked at the computer. The clicking of the keys put him to sleep. If he'd stir in the middle of the night, I only needed to put him in that fleece sling and start typing.

Oiwwwwww... you two are so lovely.
And I will be sure to come back and check out your list of essentials.
